Sweet, Sweet October

Hello my little buckaroos! Today there is a lot of excitement around the ranch. Why? Because it's October 1st! We love Halloween around here and today, I get to decorate to my heart's content with pumpkins and ghoulies and goblins! I can't wait. I also can't wait to get back into Ranch Dressing full swing. I've been away for a bit concentrating on other things but am now looking forward to spending more time here.

I thought that we might kick off the Halloween season with a photo that I found in Mr. Kitsch's family album. That's right - straight out of 1975!

Hot dog! Can't you just smell those old plastic costumes? Am I the only one old enough to remember.. or to still have scars on my tongue from gasping for air through the tiny but dangerously sharp mouths on those masks?

Throughout the month of October, I'd love to showcase some of my own little kid Halloween pictures and some of yours too! If you have one that you'd like to share, please send it to me through the "Contact Me" link on the side of my page. Make sure to send the largest, most high-resolution photo that you can and to tell me a little about it. And let me know what name you want me to use - i.e. your real name or a screen name.

And even if you don't have a photo that you want to send in, I'd love to hear about your favorite costumes or Halloween memories from childhood. Thanks y'all!

Until next time....Boo!
x's and o's,
Eartha

I hope I can find my Halloween decorations--no idea where I stashed them after last year!

Love the photo. It and your description of the "dangerously sharp mouths" on the masks gave me a flashback. My mom usually made our costumes (my favorite--the hobo), but that witchy mask in the front row looks really familiar.

I am SO with you! Somewhere in the move, I lost a large severed foot and a black crow. I mean..what box would I possibly have put those in? And why I haven't I seen them by now? :)

I hope that you can find yours!

I'd love to see that hobo photo...or any that you'd want to share.

Oh man, I have some dandies to send you!

I had forgotten all about wearing those damn masks. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Did the sides on your costume always split open like mine? Cheap plastic crap! And the smell. Nothing like getting high on plastic fumes and then getting high on sugar too. Good times.

Looking forward to seeing your photos!

Yay! I can't wait to see! :)

And ha! they did split open. I remember having to have them taped back together on the sides. I guess that's why you can find so many of the old masks still but not as many costumes. Shredded!

I sadly can't participate, Halloween is not big in the UK, well it's getting bigger but when I was a kid it was almost non-existant!! Still I can't wait to see everyones! I have read several US blogs today and everyone is ready to decorate, it's great.

Here are my Halloween costumes from a blog post long ago. Sigh.

Honey, I totally remember those plastic costumes. The thing was in Chicago it usually was freezing when we were trying to trick or treat, thus needing coats, hats, and sometimes umbrellas and no one knew what you were anyway. That was even before indoor shopping mall trick or treating. if you wanted the candy you walked uphill in the snow both ways to get it!

I always longed for one of those plastic costumes (although the masks terrified me!) because I thought they were fancy. Just like the wheat bread and Fig Newtons in my lunch box, my mom insisted on "authenticity" in costuming. Ugh. I was a "gypsy" too many times to count!

I will have to find my old Halloween pictures...my favorite is a made-by-my mom Princess Leia {which I just HAD to be in the 2nd(?) grade because I overheard that the love of my 7 year old life was going to be Luke Skywalker...apparently that was before we knew they were twins!}

Hi Eartha, longtime lurker, first time commentor! I was a costuming major in college (theatre), so of course I LOVE Halloween!

I never once got the plastic costume, although I remember my sister pleading her case with my Mom at about age six, so she could be Strawberry Shortcake. That Halloween night, our neighbors came over (we always went trick-or-treating together), and the neighbor girl who was my sister's age was also an identical Miss Shortcake. I remember Meredith burst into tears and told Mom that she couldn't go! Poor girl, she had never had that happen before! We never did the plastic again....

This is the only photo of me/Halloween I had available, but now you've got me hunting for more:
