Today, I went to the salon to have my hair done. After getting one of those fancy sleek blow-outs that only a stylist can do, I remarked to her "Wow, my hair looks too good for how exhausted I look."
She replied: "Aww! You just need to get your makeup on, that's all!"
Yep, you guessed it. I was already wearing makeup.
Whomp! Whomp!

Sad trombone indeed
They have those terrible lights in my hairdressers that shine striaght down onto the top of your head. I pointed out to them that's how you light people in horror movies if you want to make them look like zombies!
Haha. Just like the time the beautician told me, "now you need someone to teach you how to put on eye make-up." I always thought mascara was enough for a school teacher! Linda @Wetcreek Blog

Oooops!!! I'd say that calls for treating yourself to a splurge at the makeup counter. Now that I mention it, my own makeup has been looking a little tired lately. Maybe I need to check out some new colors.
As a real-life beauty school dropout, it was comments like that that made me realize I didn't want to be part of that industry. We were taught how to upsell people into buying products they didn't really need by subtly making them feel self-conscious about their "flaws." For example, while shampooing somebody, you'd say very casually, "Ya know, our tea tree oil shampoo helps with flaky scalp." whether or not the person has an issue with flaky scalp. I mean, almost everybody has *some* flakes in their hair...it's skin, it sheds! I went to a stylist once for a dye job and while I was in the waiting area, the make-up girl came up to me (unprovoked) "Ya know, we sell foundations that won't break your skin out." I had like one zit! Don't try to make me feel bad to get a commission!
Pardon my french...but...bitches!
Sometimes chicks can be so thoughtless.
A chick doing my eyebrows once told me that they carried products that wouldn't make my nose break out in such "embarrassing" black heads. Really wench?! Stick to the eyebrows! It took a lot of effort to keep from pouring wax on her pretty hairless face... grrrr...end rant.
Why do people make remarks like this!? It would be so much easier to just say, "You look gorgeous!" and let the client go! Tsk, tsk on that lady.
oh gosh, she really put her foot in her mouth!
i was at a vendor fair for work and one rep said to a girl i work with (who is 26 and great looking) "wow you changed your hair. it makes you look older! which is great for women your age. OH, and here is some concealer, you look tired!" it was like a triple punch! it was so over the top that we just laughed.
Well...as a stylist....I sometimes offer advice because I figure they just DON"T know. Like how to pencil in their brows to make them look younger, or that using gel and hair spray DOES work! Or, people don't know that they can get a facial to treat blackheads. Or waxing their eyebrows will open up their eyes....Or getting glasses that flatter their face....they need tips! That's why I go to hair shows for and keep up on the trends in the magazines, so I can help people look and feel better.
Regarding the makeup thing....it's the drapes we use....I swear it just washes you out.
Wow - a real Debbie Downer moment, wasn't it? What do you say to that? I'm sure she was well-meaning.........:)
