We Were All Kids Once

I was picking out childhood photos to make fun of my brother with this morning and came across this one of myself. This was first or second grade, I think. Anyway....I quickly realized that I was a pretty big dork as a kid!

And I might have also been a boy.

On a positive note, this IS proof that I had bangs before bangs were cool. Or maybe while they were cool and through many cycles of their of coolness and uncool-ness. So the next time that someone tells me that I have "Zooey Deschanel hair" or even more timely: "Michelle Obama hair", I'll have to remind them that for the most part, my forehead hasn't seen the light of day since toddlerhood. Half the time, even I don't know what's under those bangs.

I have no quick excuse for my freakin' huge shirt collar though. All that I can guess is that disco fever had puddled down to the elementary school set.

The loverly ladies over at Modern Kiddo just did a post with some of the best vintage school class shots. Go on over and take a look. The fashions will inspire and amaze you (and make my yellow vest seem less jarring). Wonder at them all here at Modern Kiddo.

I'd love to hear about your most mortifying school photos! Please tell me that you had them. Soothe my Buster Brown haircut ache!

Until next time,
x's and o's,
Eartha

I'm a little younger then you, so I have the dreaded 90s Glamour Shots to haunt me, lmao.

Ha! Hey at least, you were young and cute when you got your Glamour Shots. When I had mine done, I was old and had no right having my photo made with pearls in my mouth!

This post makes me love you all the more! I also had bangs before Zooey Deschennel deemed them hip...it was 1987 so yes I win. Please post more baby kitsch photos!

Eartha Kitsch said...

Ha! Was she even born then? I'd have to check. You totally win! Be careful what you wish for. I think I have worse ones than this!

My first grade picture is too hideous to post on the Internet. It's been known to make grown men cry. My grandmother had taken me for a haircut and perm right before school started...without asking my parents if it was OK to cut off my long Shirley Temple curls. My bangs were too short to perm, so they were straight as a board, and the rest was a burned up, frizzy hot mess.

There's a "why-do-I-look-like-a-boy" school picture of my daughter too, so take heart. You aren't the only one! haha

Oh, OK...I'll confess to some really lame Glamour Shots in the 90s too. I was in my 40s...and way too old for a picture in a black leather jacket with the front open enough to discreetly show that there was nothing underneath. I had sworn that I'd never admit that to a living soul, but you inspire honesty...LOL

I just don't know why people try brand new hairdos on days before school pictures! Bad results are bound to happen. I bet your parents were fit to be tied! Re: Glamour Shots: HA! Oh, how many of us have those things hiding in our past? I have a leather jacket one too and it's horrible! I was a member of a Flickr group once and we all recreated Glamour Shots. It was absolutely hilarious.

Four words, re: my grade school photos, 2nd-4th grade: Fat kid. Mock turtleneck. IT WAS CHILD ABUSE, EARTHA. IT WAS CHILD ABUSE FOR THEM TO DRESS ME THE WAY THEY DID! Also, my dad trimmed both my sister's and my own bangs...let the record show that he cannot draw a straight line, and he also cannot cut one. It's amazing I still talk to them. ((shakes head)) I still think your picture here is AWESOME, look at those pointed collar points! The comments from everyone are also hilarious.

Apparently when I was around 7 my mom was sick of washing my hip length hair because I would scream while she did it. Let me also tell you I have twice the amount of hair a normal person has. She cut my hair into almost a pixie cut so I looked like I was wearing a Russian fur hat instead of my hair. My school photo she added a little barrette to make me look like less of a monkey and more little girl.

I had one in second grade where my half-grown out bangs were totally covering my face. I totally thought I was going to look like Jessica Rabbit, but I just looked like Justin Beiber. So I had Beiber hair before it was "cool" hahaha

I can name that tune in 2 words: Home. Perm.

So.....yeah.

Lisa: Ohmygosh hon! I think we totally needed a team stylists as kids. Something was just BOUND to go wrong. Gah, mock turtlenecks.... I cut my bangs yesterday with your Dad's technique. With craft scissors. It's a...look.

Trina: Oh my word..that vision of the little fur hat made of hair just breaks my heart! I think all of our Moms had a serious learning curve on how to do little kid hair.

Laura: Ha! Did you have throngs of teen girls following your every move? Beiber's hair....it's a constant fascination for me.

Margo: Oh yes! Lilt. Ogilvie. They all smelled like rotten eggs and hurt like the dickens.

My mom had my hair cut like Dorothy Hamel's when I was in first grade. I looked like a little Amish boy with a bowl cut! And by 6th grade I had the Farrah Fawcett feathered thing going on. I used so much Aqua Net on those things that when a gust of wind came up from behind I looked like I had wings sticking out of my head!

Eartha Kitsch said...

Yes! I tell you - that Dorothy cut really swept the world and unless an amazing hairstylist was the one who did it, it always turned out wonky or heavy or just....like an Amish boy. : ) That one took some serious skills.

The Farrah cut - that one I kind of like. I never achieved it but totally wanted to!

I can't say as I did. Growing bangs out is the worst, I either have Beiber hair, or if I part it, 90s heartthrob hair haha

Eartha Kitsch said...

Yeah, that IS hard! Mine always looks like a crazy combover if I ever try to grow them out and to the side. Bangs forever. Less fuss.

How funny, you TOTALLY looked like Debra, one of my best pals in grade school who I'm sure grew up to be lesbian,or a man. I have to hunt for him/her at facebook

i too have had bangs pretty much since birth. i will still have them when it isn't cool anymore. i have one kid pictuer at my house but I only have it because it is REALLY cute. There are a bunch of later years with buck teeth and falling out braids and splatter paint glasses.
and i'm about to laugh out loud just IMAGINING you in a glamour shot with pearls in your mouth. YOU HAVE TO POST IT!!!!

Eartha Kitsch said...

I'll always have bangs too - bangs brigade forever!

I kind of want to see your buck teeth, falling out braids and paint splatter glasses photos. : ) You never know. i might be hurtin' for material one of these days and break out those glamour shots!

I also look like a boy as a first grader. I asked my mom... why did you cut all my hair off. She didn't have a good answer. I was traumatized and once I took control of my hair, rarely cut it, to this day. Not that this is a good thing.

Does anyone here remember Novahistine? It was an allergy medication that was purple (and tasted purple too). It worked great! But although it dried you up, it also knocked you out. One of my school pictures in about second or third grade shows me completely zoned out on Novahistine. It's amazing I made it through grade school. Kate

Eartha, I am guessing we are in the same general age range because I have basically the exact same photo of myself--actually *more* than one--same Dorothy Hamill hair, similar Disco Stu shirt, similar sweater vest. And a big chunky gold letter K necklace. (If I had my way, I'd also be wearing my beloved blue satin baseball jacket.)

a silk shirt and suspenders still haunt me. thank god there are no picture. haha.

I would like to see that Glamour Shot. Do you have one where you're tippin your hat with the sequined Air Force jacket on? And I think bangs are just a right of passage. My granny used to get our portraits done at the little booth in front of Brookshire Bros. grocery. She'd doll us up in big satin and lace dresses, never mind we had short boy cuts. I too, was an androgynous child. That must also be a right of passage.... I love your blog, you make me laugh or smile or think on somethin every time.

Rebecca: Maybe Moms just get this longing at some point to start whacking away at that stuff! Maybe you were like me and cried and whined when she tried to comb the tangles out? I'm pretty sure that's why my Mom gave me the bowl cut. : )

Kate: I do! Never used it but i remember it. It's so crazy to think of you drugged up so young. Do you still take allergy meds? I take one and I can tell that it's the only reason that I sleep at night. Totally knocks ya out.

Karen: Probably so! Wow! You've always had style apparently. I loved those jackets but never had one. "Gold Letter K" = yes!!

Robert: Oh no! I was just getting ready to ask for a picture. That's a hilarious combo!

Laura: Maybe! I did not have any sequined jackets in my photoshoot. You did? That sounds hilariously awesome! I'd LOVE to see those photo booth pictures! And thank you for your sweet words. I love your blog too!

I LOVE your school picture more than anything, I think it is completely awesome! I'll have to go back and look at my old school pics, I know I had some real doozeys!

Oh, my you cracked me up with the caption on your school picture. My one daughter has a similar school pic and haircut several years back that I call "the mushroom head"...it was the only cut that kept the hair out of her mouth & eyes at the time (she was also mistaken for a boy!) :D

Hi Eartha

My school photos were the worst ..I think that I looked like the penultimate "geek".

Your school picture is wonderful.

Do bangs ever REALLY go out of style? I don't think so!

I was always small for my age, so in one class picture I'm wearing a Garanimals shirt...in NINTH GRADE.
