Dino-mite!

Another agony of defeat story from Craiglist today. I couldn't help but notice an ad for a free dinosaur. Of course, I figured it was a toy dinosaur. So imagine my surprise when I clicked the link:

That's right - a nine foot long dinosaur! For free! (And seriously..how cool is this teacher that she let her kids make this?)

I jumped into action. The first order of business was getting the Mister to say that I could have him for the patio. And he did! - but the only stipulation was that I needed to find someone to haul him home. Oh, the agony of driving a tiny compact car! I zapped off a few hectic texts and emails to friends begging, "Do you know ANYONE who can help me move a nine foot dinosaur??" but as you'd expect, got no takers.

And then, someone else got the dinosaur before I could. Sigh...

I could just picture myself in a pickup truck with my new friend, the dinosaur perched precariously in the back on his way to his new home at the ranch. And the cute eyes that I was going to paint on him. And the natty vest.

I'll have to hand it the award as the best "free" ad that I've seen on Craigslist in a while though!

And maybe I can talk the Mister into building our own dinosaur in the Fall when it gets cooler. I'll add it to the list.

Until next time,
x's and o's,
Eartha

I am the same way when it comes to needing a truck. The Camry can hold five people comfortably, but can't haul anything of significance.

I think you should have a paper-mache menagerie in your house - that way someone just like you could discover it and blog about it 50 years from now.

haha that is awesome! gotta love good ol' craigslist!

Wow, definitely the most awesome craig's list item, EVER. I'm so sad you didn't get it. The dino reminds me of roadside attractions in California (huge dino sculptures!).

I know Home Depot rents out trucks... something to consider the next time you see a 9 foot dino on CL. ;)

You know we would have hooked you up if our little cars would have fit a green dinosaur.

Oh WOW!

Like you, when I bought my 50's pink kitchen appliances, I could find no one to do it for free, so I had to pay the friend of a guy who was out of work, TWICE what I paid for the appliances, to go get them (OK, so they were an hour away, one way, but geeeez!!).

Same with a pair of chairs I got. That was the last time I paid anyone to pick up stuff, forget it!!

Sorry you lost your dino! But yes, could be a big fun project to make your own! I made a life-sized horse head myself a few years ago. :)

In my husband's hometown there's a crumbling old theme park called Prehistoric Forest that's been for sale for years. It's full of decaying dinosaurs and other weirdness and has a train that takes you around to see them all. Our big dream is to someday buy it and build houses for all our friends with these sad dinosaurs peeking in the windows...

Oooh, that's heartbreaking! I love that gorgeous dinosaur and would have snapped him up in a heartbeat. I drive a tiny car too, it sucks for thrifting! I need more friends with trucks!

Maybe what you need is a roof rack. I could just picture a 9' dino strapped to the roof of a compact! By the by, do you want a life sized sit-on unicorn? I have one of those in my garage, I made him for a project. We no longer need him and he's taking up A LOT of space! I was thinking of putting it on CL myself! That might top a dinosaur!

Sara: I know!! Seriously, if you lived here, there is no telling what I'd have y'all hauling for me.

erin: I know! I was devastated! How often do you see a free dinosaur?

JohnnyBerry: Don't you tempt me!

Lauren Atom: You sure do. It always thrills and perplexes me.

Thriftaholic: Thanks! Me too..There is a Home Depot about a mile from our house. I might be dangerous with this knowledge.

Georgie: Aww! Thanks anyway!

1950's atomic ranch house: See, that's the thing! Sometimes the hauling fees are more expensive than the items. It's maddening. That horse head I'd like to see!

Betty Crafter: Oh wow..Does that not sound like the most magical neighborhood? It kind of makes me misty eyed to think of living amongst big old dinosaurs.

Van: You and me both, I tell ya! There is no telling the things we'd bring home if we had hauling access.

Amber: Ha! I'd look like a wonderful parade float! If I lived near you, I'd be BEGGING for that unicorn. I promise you that!

HOW DID I MISS THIS. You skip checking the craigslist free category for ONE DAY and this is what you miss out on, I scold myself. Agh. Reminds me of a fifties' console tv, very very George Jetson, that was behind a dentist's office, next to a dumpster, in Smyrna (provenance unknown, that's all the ad said). In the time it took me to see who had a car capacious enough to accommodate said tv and could also take me out to Smyrna by nightfall, the listing had been taken down. The agony! I feel your pain!

Moral: I should obviously trade in the Honda for a Ford F150. The junk hauling possibilities!

Wow! I never see such cool stuff on Craigslist! Definitely would have pounced on that!

Lisa: Wow! That TV sounds so cool! I know your heart was broken. It's so true - people who have hauling capabilities definitely prevail in the Craigslist world. Where we have to study over it, they just drive over and take it. Maybe we should go in together on a truck. :)

Suzy8-Track: Most stuff is usually pretty boring. This dinosaur was a "wow" item for sure!

Truck? NO! You need to get into the midcentury-housewife pattern with a suitably retro station wagon! I've always been partial to the '57-64 Mopars, but a '59-60 GM has a similar space age look (and the Chevys have better parts support than some '90s cars) while Ford's Country Squire had the fake-wood thing to itself from the early '50s to the mid '60s...
