One of our kitties, Mishka had to see a feline dental specialist on Monday. We had no choice as our regular vets can't seem to fix things and referred us over. I laugh at our naivete' as we guessed how much it would cost when the vet tech left the room to print out our estimate. When she came back with the true estimate, it seemed as if the air got sucked out of the room and I blacked out for a minute. And maybe wondered how much plasma is going for these days. And considered selling my body. I remember saying, "Oh my god..." and throwing my hand up over my mouth. And the vet tech looking very uncomfortable.
The Mister said that we should have known when we saw that they had sleek flat-screen Macs at the check-in counter and not PCs covered in cat hair and post-its like our other vets do. And the place did not smell like pets. AND they kept offering us complimentary beverages. Everyone that we met with said, "Would you like a complimentary beverage from our beverage station?" When we were leaving with Mishka after paying that bill post-surgery, I saw the Mister do a double-take as we passed the beverage station. I asked him after we left, "You were thinking about grabbing something, weren't you?" He said, "Heck yeah! After what we just paid them, I felt like they owed us SOMETHING. ANYTHING. WE DESERVE SOMETHING!" Then he showed me the free pen that he'd accepted from the vet tech. "Got the free pen though!"
Mishka is back home with us now and on some pretty heavy meds as we await her biopsy results. Uggh...the waiting is the worst. The meds have made her the world's sweetest cat and Pip, who she usually attacks seems completely boggled that Mishka isn't trying to wipe her off of the face of the Earth. Thus, she has gained new confidence and now thinks she's queen of the roost. It's become like The Lord of The Flies around here as she fights to assume her dominance. Over me, sadly. She's been climbing my legs and biting me and as a person who only wears skirts, this is wearing thin.
So, things have been less than enjoyable this week at Camp Kitsch. The very first thing that I said when the Mister woke me up this morning wasn't "Good Morning" but instead, "I need a drink." Of course, he knew that this meant sweet tea but still, it shouldn't be the first thing that one thinks as they are drawn out of sleepy town.
I hope that you all have fun weekend plans. Have enough fun for me too, if you would. For my Nashville peeps, there is a free Daniel Johnston show tonight at Lipscomb. If you're a fan, you'll know that this is about as rare as Halley's Comet. Get you some here.
Until next time,
x's and o's,
Eartha

Sorry to hear this Eartha, I can imagine all the reminders making things extra hard. Hopefully one day they'll become comforting instead.
On the subject of cat dentistry, my sister would feel your pain. Her cat got hit by a car a few years ago and needed massive surgery on her teeth and jaw. No insurance - thousands of pounds. Her tongue still pokes out most of the time - but it was worth it.
oh, eartha, i'm so sorry to hear about your loss and your poor mishka's problems! i hope you have a restful weekend with lots of comfort and healing.
Trying to scrape together 500 or 600 dollars to fix a feline kitty problem at our home too. I think they are all expensive.
Heidi sent me this way! Love yer blog.

I am so sorry you've had a rotten week! But I do have a sort of Heloise Hint for biting cats: if you have a cat who is biting your hands, mix a tiny bit of Tobasco in with your handlotion next time you put some on. (Don't touch your face!) It only takes one or two times before they stop doing it and it doesn't hurt them, just makes their mouth hot. Also it works on power cords, if they like to nibble on them.
))))))HUGS(((((((
I am with you in spirit sweetie!
many hugs from Canada!
I'm sorry for your loss. I've had a similar experience recently when our young nephew passed away suddenly and unexpectedly...it IS hard to get motivated after this kind of week! I wish you the best with your kitty and hope next week is much better.
Poor thing :( I can't imagine living next to someone that is gone. I'm so sorry to hear about your rough week. Chin up, you'll get through this!
Sorry to hear your sad news. And wishing Mishka a speedy recovery.
I'm sorry, Kelly. :( I wish I lived close by so I could come over with some "drinks" and a sympathetic ear.
OH Eartha, I am so sorry for your loss. Take time to remember and cherish those memories. Our deepest sympathies, honey.
I am so sorry about Mishka's teeth too! I have one client that had to have their kitty's teeth removed altogether, due to constant pain and infections, and her gums kind of hardened and she gets along fine. This makes me think I have to get Duffy in ASAP cos his gums do not look good for a kitty only 2 1/2 years old.
You are good pet parents, THE BEST, and I know all that $ will be returned to you 100 fold in love.

Oh, Eartha, I'm so sorry. :( Don't even know what else to say...how awful. Take your time to work through the grief process. It's totally understandable!
Sorry to hear about the difficulties with Mishka, too! Poor thing, and poor YOU guys! What a rough week. :( Can we blame La Nina? Sigh.
Take care of yourself for a while. You are definitely going through a lot! Avoid the soul-suckers and try to find good things, if you can.
Big hugs to both of you.
awwwww! poor kitty! we go to a "classy" vet now, too and every time we're they they offer us coffee. haha. i always take it. we usually get a little treat bag with cat treats or toys in them. DEMAND A TREAT BAG NEXT TIME. it's the least they can do. really.
