Uggh...do we have to?? Tornado season is seriously the worst. Just this morning, my pest control lady said to us "Didn't y'all used to have a huge basement at your old house with a concrete storm bunker?" while standing in our now one-level ranch house.
Um, yep.
There is something completely different about this storm. Things are being taken way more seriously than usual. I'm not sure if it's because of the devastation and deaths that have been left in the wake of storms in the past several days or if a lot of people are remembering the big tornado that hit Nashville in 1998. It's both, I'm guessing.
Lots of schools and businesses are closed which I've never seen happen. There is a certain pitch to the air. We woke up to a hail storm this morning and now the birds and squirrels are going nuts. Even the Mister who is from Kansas (where they're used to things comin' whippin' down the plains) is taking things seriously and coming home from work early.
In related and ridiculous news, I decided to take a peek into our emergency supply cabinet:
And it appears that we have a lone can of Veg-All (which it would truly take an emergency to make me eat), one can of Fancy Feast, an orange soda from our wedding and quite a bit of moonshine. Looks like we're ready for anything.
To my friends in the path, please be safe.
Until next time,
x's and o's,
Eartha

This scares and worries me.
Be safe Eartha Kitsch, Mister and kitties!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be thinking of you as I pack my cats and their carriers into my closet !! Just heard weather person on WKRN tell viewers to make sure they have on good shoes and a coat, I lived through "great outbreak of '74" and know to take warnings seriously, but I've never heard a weather person tell their audience that !! They have my attention today :) Hang on its starting to rumble up my way !!
Jenny: Thanks! We're in freak-out mode right now.
E: I've never heard that either. Everyone really seems to be worried about this one. You and your kitties be safe! Please report back and let us know that you're okay.
We're under the watches here in Louisville. Never seen them act like this before either. They even canceled schools. Everyone be safe.
Seriously, schools are closed because of this? I thought it was for illness. I knew the weather people were predicting "tornadic" activity, but I had no idea it was being taken quite *this* seriously.
I'm in Lebanon, and I don't have a basement either. I have nowhere to go except a closet--and because my three large dogs wouldn't fit in there with me, I've decided I have to take my chances with them.
Your can of Veg-All made me laugh -- especially that you said it would take a true emergency for you to eat it!
Glad I found your blog -- you are a riot, and I love your kitschy style! xo
Oh, and from one southern girl to another -- stay safe!
i am work of course. whole foods didn't even want to close in the flood, but not enough people could make it in. At least travis is home with the critters, which makes me feel a little better. :/
Check out the latest posting on my blog and our picture of us in our safe place. Hope you and the MR are good and had no damage. We are ok on this side of Nashville.
I hope you weathered the storm! I'm thinking of you!
Gosh it is like another world to us here in the UK - can't imagine how scary this must be. Stay safe Eartha and family x
Everything okay????
I remember the terror of the tornadoes when I lived in Missouri. My mom and dad are insurance agents in Arkansas now who routinely see policy holders from California (who just moved to the area) return promptly after the first storm and tell them "Here...you keep these tornadoes. We'd go back to face Earthquakes any day!"
Be sure you ration that "shine" now!
I hope you're safe!I miss Indiana sometimes but definitely not the tornados. When I heard Marysville IN had been completely wiped out it made me so sad.I'm glad to me far more north where I just have to worry about too much snow.
Tornadoes are one of my biggest fears. My boyfriend was being forced to work on top of a roof on 16th Avenue around 3:30 Friday afternoon during the middle of it all. I was at work on the 31st floor of the Renaissance downtown until I finally went to the basement of the convention center. It was so windy all day that our blinds were actually swaying in the office. I work with a bunch of kooks that have no fear of Mother Nature and think I'm a big baby! I am so glad that is over and Nashville didn't get it as bad as we thought it might. Dreading the next round of bad weather.... :(
Of all the things mother nature throws at us, tornadoes have to be the scariest.
I was totally in freak-out mode, too! They CLOSED the LIBRARY. While I was there, at work! The powers-that-be didn't even do that for the ice storm last year that left me skidding all over Gallatin Road in the back of an MTA bus! Everything was very scary for about 10 minutes, then back to normal (ie the one dead tree in my front year loosed another huge branch onto the internet cable, which we then had to go out and hurl into the ditch). Hope you guys fared the same or better!
I really like your blog! Your story about James touched me so much, since I recently lost my uncle from cancer. It sounds as if they were very much alike. So here's to the quiet lonely men and those of us who care.
Hope all's OK?
Tornado season is the WORST! I remember hiding in the cellar a lot in Ohio. Is there anything scarier than the Tornado alarm? I'll take the earth quakes over the tornadoes any day!
ugh! we barely slept the other night. fortunately, we have more than a an of veg-all. who buys that stuff? haha.
